RTX 4090 graphics card prices shot up around September 2024. Where still available, they now approach 11 thousand PLN. What caused such a sharp increase, and what is the outlook?
Why have prices risen?
Restrictions on sales to China : In September 2024, the USA imposed further restrictions on exports of advanced graphics chips to China. As one of the most powerful cards available, the RTX 4090 became scarce there, creating strong demand for alternative sources. Resellers consequently began buying large quantities on global markets, causing shortages and higher prices.
Production winding down : Nvidia is preparing to launch the RTX 5000 series, gradually phasing out RTX 4090 production. Reduced supply alongside strong demand always raises prices.
The AI boom : RTX 4090 cards are extremely popular with AI enthusiasts because of their strong machine-learning performance. Growing interest in artificial intelligence and local AI models has significantly increased demand.
Speculation and scalping : Speculative buying has returned to the computer components market. Anticipating restrictions, scalpers and resellers bought RTX 4090 cards in bulk, driving up second-hand prices.
What is the outlook?
Will RTX 4090 prices rise further? Probably, particularly if availability continues falling and demand from AI users and cryptocurrency miners remains high.
However, the situation may stabilise over the coming months with the launch of the RTX 5000 series. Nvidia's new generation could ease pressure on the market and reduce interest in the RTX 4090, potentially leading to gradual price falls.
Is it worth buying an RTX 4090 now?
Anyone needing this card for work, such as rendering or AI calculations, may have no choice but to pay a high price. For gamers and home users, waiting for the next generation may be better, bringing higher performance at lower prices.
It is better to wait to buy an RTX 4090 until the RTX 5090appears. The first units are expected tomorrow, January 30, 2025. We already know quantities will be very limited, with meaningful availability expected only around April 2025.
What do you think: will RTX 4090 prices rise further, or is this a speculative bubble about to burst?
