Computer graphics is a field of computing concerned with generating, processing, analysing and presenting images using computers. It covers a broad range of technologies and applications, from simple drawings to advanced 3D visualizations, reality simulations and computer games.
Main aspects of computer graphics
Image generation
Creating images from scratch, such as 3D models, virtual scenes, 3D visualizations, animations, visual effects and computer games. Until recently, all this work was performed by people. More recently, many images have been generated by AI. Read more in our article attempting to answer the question: will AI replace 3D artists?.
Image processing
Manipulating existing images through colour correction, filtering, photo processing and video editing.
Image analysis
Recognising objects and analysing visual data, for example in machine vision, medicine and diagnostics.
Data presentation
Visualizing information in science, medicine and engineering, for example through charts, maps and simulations.
Fields of computer graphics
2D graphics
Flat images such as illustrations, logos, user interfaces, photos and website graphics.
3D graphics
Spatial models, architectural visualizations, 3D visualizations, product visualization, computer games.
Computer animation
Creating moving images, for example in films and advertisementsand games.
Scientific and technical visualization
Presenting complex data in an understandable form.
Tools and technologies used in computer graphics
Software
Computer graphics software is enormously varied, ranging from simple photo editors common on mobile devices to advanced all-in-one 3D packages. Let us focus on more professional applications.
2D graphics
Adobe has dominated for years with Photoshop and Lightroom. GIMP is one alternative. In vector graphics, Corel, Illustrator and Inkscape deserve mention, the latter being a very good free alternative.
3D graphics
Autodesk's 3D Studio Max and Maya have long been among the most popular, versatile programs, with Blender as a free competitor. Many more specialised applications are also available, including SketchUp, Rhino and ZBrush.
Video editing and special effects
Adobe Premiere and After Effects are among the oldest programs still available, although they face strong competition.
At Pogotowie 3D, we specialise in one aspect of computer graphics: 3D graphics. We create 3D visualizations, product and building visualizations and advanced photorealistic animations. We invite you to explore our portfolio.
